Tile
At Dyson Contracting, we treat tile not just as a surface covering — it's a design element, a durable finish, and a statement of craftsmanship. From bathrooms to kitchens, accent walls to floors, we bring experience in material selection, installation precision, and long-term performance.
We're happy to collaborate with local showroom partners like Flooring Solutions Muskoka in Huntsville to help you pick the right tile and accessories for your project.
Tile Types

Porcelain Tile
Porcelain tile is the go-to for durability and moisture resistance, perfect for high-traffic areas, bathrooms, and kitchens where strength and longevity matter most.

Ceramic Tile
Ceramic tile is a reliable, cost-effective choice for walls, backsplashes, and light-traffic floors, offering a huge range of colours and finishes for versatile interior design.

Natural Stone Tile
Granite, Marble, Slate, Travertine, and more. Natural stone tile delivers a timeless, upscale look with one-of-a-kind patterns and textures — ideal for feature walls, luxury bathrooms, and statement floors.

Glass and Mosaic Tile
Glass and mosaic tiles add colour, shine, and artistry to spaces, often used as accent bands, shower niches, or feature backsplashes that bring personality to a room.

Porcelain Tile
Porcelain is the standard for strength and longevity. It’s fired at higher temperatures than ceramic, creating a denser, harder surface that stands up beautifully to water, wear, and time. That makes it ideal for bathrooms, mudrooms, and high-traffic living areas — anywhere moisture or durability are key.
Because of its low water absorption rate and structural toughness, porcelain can also extend outdoors to patios and walkways without fear of frost damage. Its refined, consistent surface is available in finishes that mimic stone, wood, or concrete, offering the performance of porcelain with the look of natural materials.
When long-term durability and easy maintenance are priorities, porcelain delivers unmatched performance.

Ceramic Tile
Ceramic tile remains one of the most dependable and versatile options for both homes and commercial spaces. Made from natural clay and finished with a protective glaze, it offers endless design possibilities — from subtle matte neutrals to glossy statement colours.
Its affordability and ease of maintenance make it a great choice for walls, backsplashes, and lower-traffic floors. Because it’s slightly softer and more porous than porcelain, ceramic is best suited to dry or moderate-moisture areas like kitchens, powder rooms, and entryways where durability meets design flexibility.
For many clients, ceramic tile delivers the perfect balance of visual appeal, practicality, and cost-effectiveness.

Natural Stone Tile
Natural stone — granite, marble, slate, travertine, and limestone — brings something no manufactured tile can replicate: the beauty of material formed over millions of years. Every slab and tile is genuinely unique, with its own veining, texture, and colour variation.
Stone is most at home in spaces where you want a sense of permanence and luxury — master bathrooms, fireplace surrounds, entry floors, and feature walls. It pairs well with both traditional and contemporary interiors, depending on the finish (polished, honed, or brushed) and the species chosen.
Natural stone requires proper sealing and periodic maintenance to protect against staining and moisture, especially in wet environments. We assess every project to recommend the right stone, the right grout, and the right sealant for long-lasting performance.

Glass and Mosaic Tile
Glass and mosaic tiles are the artistry of tile work. Where porcelain and ceramic form the foundation, glass and mosaic are the details that elevate a space — a shower niche, a backsplash band, a feature wall — and give it personality.
Glass tile in particular has a reflective quality that adds depth and light to a room. In a shower or bathroom, it can transform a functional space into something that feels designed. Mosaic formats — penny rounds, hexagons, stacked rectangles — work beautifully as accents or transition elements between larger-format tiles.
These materials require precise installation: consistent adhesive coverage, careful grouting, and clean execution. We take the time to get the details right, because that’s exactly what these tiles are — details.
Installation Methods
The right installation method depends on the tile size, location, and substrate. Getting this wrong is the most common reason tiles crack, pop loose, or develop lippage over time.
Large Format (>12")
Tiles over 12 inches require a flat substrate, full-coverage thinset on both the tile and the floor (back-buttering), and a leveling system to prevent lippage. Large format creates a clean, seamless look with fewer grout lines, but tolerates zero imperfection in the subfloor.
Standard Format (4-12")
Traditional square and rectangular tiles are more forgiving on slightly uneven surfaces. Standard thinset application with notched trowel and spacers. The most versatile format for walls, floors, and showers.
Mosaic (<4")
Small tiles on mesh backing. Ideal for shower floors, niches, and accent areas. The mesh conforms to curved or sloped surfaces, and the additional grout lines provide grip in wet areas. Requires careful adhesive coverage to avoid hollow spots.
Plank Tile
Long, narrow porcelain tiles that mimic hardwood. Installed in a staggered brick pattern with a 1/3 offset. Requires an exceptionally flat floor and leveling system because any bow in the plank creates visible lippage at the edges.
Waterproofing & Substrate Preparation
Tile itself is waterproof, but the assembly behind it is not. In showers, bathroom floors, and any area with regular water exposure, a proper waterproofing system is essential. Without it, water migrates through grout and thinset into the subfloor, causing mould, rot, and structural damage.
We use Prova and Schluter waterproofing systems depending on the project. For showers, this means a full membrane applied over the substrate before any tile goes up. For floors, we use decoupling membranes like Prova Flex-Tile or Schluter DITRA that provide both waterproofing and crack prevention.
Ardex products handle the substrate side. Self-levelling compounds create a perfectly flat surface for large-format tile. Modified thinset mortars provide the bond strength needed for heavy porcelain and natural stone. The right combination of products ensures the tile installation performs as a complete system, not just a surface.
Every tile project we do includes a substrate assessment. We check flatness, moisture levels, and structural soundness before recommending the right preparation. This is where the difference between a tile job that lasts five years and one that lasts fifty is made.

“When we build, let us think that we build for ever. Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone; let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let it be such work, as we lay stone on stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them.”
